Build a sound foundation for your modeling work. This demonstration will illustrate best practices for the entire workflow in COMSOL Multiphysics® through geometry creation, setting up your physics, meshing, solving, and postprocessing the results.

Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics® and the Model Builder Minicourse

This introductory demonstration will show you the fundamental workflow of the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling environment. We will cover all of the key modeling steps, including geometry creation, setting up physics, meshing, solving, postprocessing and highlights of the new version.

Hydrogen in Steels

Depending on the steel grade and concentration, hydrogen might strongly affect the mechanical properties of steel, leading to so-called hydrogen embrittlement. A deep understanding of hydrogen transport and trapping in steels is crucial to the prevention of hydrogen embrittlement and can only be gained from a combination of experiments and finite element method (FEM) simulations. In this talk, a short overview of the main hydrogen-related use cases of the COMSOL Multiphysics® software will be given.

Learn how to model electrochemical cells, including charge transport and electrode reactions, and get an introduction to the corresponding couplings to mass transport, heat transport, and fluid flow.


Learn to use gradient-based optimization techniques and constraint equations to define and solve problems in shape, parameter, and topology optimization, as well as inverse modeling. The techniques shown are applicable for almost all types of models.

Get a quick overview of using the CFD Module and Heat Transfer Module within the COMSOL® software environment.

The Composite Materials Module enables the multiphysics simulation of composite structures. In this minicourse, you will learn how to model smart composite materials, fiber-reinforced plastics, laminated panels, and sandwich panels.

Postprocessing Minicourse

This minicourse will explore the tools for presenting COMSOL Multiphysics® results, including mirroring, revolving symmetric data, cut planes, cut lines, exporting data, joining or comparing multiple datasets, as well as animations.

Erik Bornhöft is a technical sales engineer and joined Comsol Multiphysics GmbH in 2010. He studied physics with a focus on fluid dynamics at the University of Göttingen. His thesis work at the DLR Göttingen involved experimental and numerical research into active control of supersonic flow.
Thorsten Koch
Comsol Multiphysics GmbH
Thorsten Koch ist stellvertretender Geschäftsführer der Comsol Multiphysics GmbH. Dort arbeitete er als Applikationsingenieur und in der Entwicklung. Er hat einen Abschluss in Physik und angewandter Mathematik und promovierte an der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg über 3D-Kontraktilitätsmessungen an lebenden Zellen.
Friedrich Maier
Comsol Multiphysics GmbH
Friedrich Maier is an applications engineer at Comsol Multiphysics GmbH. Previously, he studied geophysics at the University of Göttingen, where he also received his PhD in 2014. As a researcher, he focused on electromagnetic and physicochemical methods, investigating the properties of georeservoirs.
Ad van der Linden

Ad van der Linden works as an applications engineer and joined Comsol Multiphysics GmbH in 2008. Prior, he studied applied physics at the Technical University Delft in the Netherlands. He has more than 20 years of experience in electromagnetic applications combined with numerical simulations.
Niels Clausen
Comsol Multiphysics GmbH
Niels Clausen is an applications engineer who joined Comsol Multiphysics GmbH in 2016. He received his PhD in physics from the University of Göttingen, where he studied tidal friction in stars and planets.
Lars Drögemüller
Comsol Multiphysics GmbH
Lars Drögemüller has been an applications engineer at Comsol Multiphysics GmbH since 2016. He obtained his MSc in experimental solid-state physics at the University of Göttingen, where he studied the interaction of electrons and optical near fields using an ultrafast, low-energy electron diffraction experiment.
Johannes Gräwer
Comsol Multiphysics GmbH
Johannes Gräwer is a technical sales engineer at Comsol Multiphysics GmbH. He earned a PhD in physics from the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization. His research focus was the theory and simulation of complex systems and biophysics. He created the first fundamental model of food distribution in ant colonies.

Valentin Kokotin
ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG
Dr. Valentin Kokotin is currently an engineer for the Modeling and Simulation team at ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG, where his main focus is on hydrogen embrittlement. At ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe, he has also worked on developing and optimizing hot-rolled products as part of the Conventional Steels group. He earned his master's degree from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 2006 and his doctorate degree in solid-state physics from the Technical University of Dresden in cooperation with Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden in 2010.
Matthias Richwin
Dr. Matthias Richwin is the director of virtual development/simulation at KOSTAL and has been responsible for simulations in R&D since 2007. He received his PhD from the University of Wuppertal in experimental physics in the field of X-ray optics and studied physics at the University of Dortmund and RWTH Aachen University before.
