Senior Applications Engineer (Multiple Openings)

COMSOL, Inc. develops COMSOL Multiphysics, simulation software for understanding, predicting, and optimizing physics-based designs and processes in all fields of engineering, manufacturing, and scientific research. Our software is used by thousands of companies, government organizations, national labs, and universities worldwide. In keeping with our mission to sustain our position as a leader in the computer-aided engineering field, we are seeking a Senior Applications Engineer to join our team in the Burlington, MA, office.

We are seeking individuals with advanced degrees in engineering or physics, or several years of relevant industry experience, who have a deep interest in the numerical simulation of real-world physics via state-of-the-art numerical modeling software. The objective of this position is to become a subject matter expert in one or several fields. Candidates with a thorough understanding in any one of the following areas, in particular (but not limited to) the noted subspecialties, are being sought:

  • Thermal modeling: Conjugate heat transfer, radiative transport, phase change, materials processing
  • Computational fluid dynamics: Two-phase flow, nonisothermal flow, free surface flows, mixture models, chemical species transport
  • Electromagnetics: Static and dynamic magnetic field modeling, RF and wave electromagnetics, photonics and optics
  • Solid mechanics: Nonlinear materials modeling, contact modeling, fatigue, structural dynamics, and impact modeling
  • Acoustics: Nonlinear acoustics, acoustic-structure interaction, loudspeaker modeling, underwater acoustics
  • Electrochemistry: Battery and fuel cell modeling, corrosion, electrodeposition

Primary Responsibilities

  • Become a subject matter expert in one or several areas of numerical modeling that are of interest to the COMSOL customer base.
  • Provide technical support by addressing questions and providing guidance, advice, and modeling assistance in a wide variety of application areas. In this role, you will be working together with the local and global COMSOL technical support staff.
  • Independently develop and teach training classes (online and in-person) to customers and potential customers.
  • Be a technical mentor to other applications engineers and guide them in your areas of expertise.
  • Produce technical content (models, technical blog posts, etc.) that demonstrate the scope, functionality, and flexibility of the COMSOL Multiphysics software product suite. In this role, you will be disseminating your expertise in your subject matter to a large audience of COMSOL customers and colleagues.
  • Provide personalized product demonstrations of the COMSOL Multiphysics software to potential and existing customers. In this role, you will work with the global Sales department.
  • Provide technical feedback on new software functionality to the Development department.
  • Present webinars covering specialized modeling topics that are broadcast to our worldwide audience of COMSOL Multiphysics users and potential users. In this role, you will work with the Marketing department.
  • Occasional travel (customer visits, COMSOL Days, workshops, courses, and conferences) to present on and teach new and existing users about the software and how to use it.


Note: As part of your application, include a short presentation (~5-10 slides) that provides a brief overview of your work in your area of expertise. This presentation can be a conference proceeding, technical talk, or an excerpt from your PhD work that gives insight into what you have worked on.

  • PhD in engineering or physical sciences or industry experience with using COMSOL Multiphysics.
  • Demonstrated experience with computational modeling.
  • Willingness to travel (5-10% of each month).
