Introduction to Modeling Porous Media Flow

You can use COMSOL Multiphysics® with the Porous Media Flow Module, an add-on product, to model flow in porous media. In this previously held webinar, you will get an overview of the software and module before getting a detailed introduction to what porous media flow is. This includes several examples that demonstrate the ubiquity of porous media.

From there, the focus shifts to modeling flow in porous media. The major modeling steps and considerations for simulating porous media are discussed, including:

  • Importing the geometry (which can often be a complex process since the geometry is taken from scanned image data)
  • Refining the mesh (which can be expensive since fine meshing is necessary for resolving pore space)
  • Solving the fluid flow equations (which can be intensive at the macroscale)

We also discuss different approaches for simulating porous media flow and highlight a wide range of multiphysics couplings and features. Lastly, we demonstrate how to build a model that simulates Forchheimer flow.

This webinar is relevant to recently released versions of COMSOL Multiphysics®. You may notice small differences between versions. You can learn more about the Porous Media Flow Module by visiting its product page.
